October 22 update

Art Show/Open House

It will be great to see all of the art work and open up our school to prospective families for the Art Show/Open House on November 8th from 12 pm – 2 pm.  We are looking for volunteers to help with set-up, clean-up, and baking some treats.  Please contact Jenna Howe at jhowe89@comcast.net to volunteer.

Norton Chartley Halloween Parade

Pinecroft will NOT be participating in the Halloween Parade this year.  Instead we will focus our efforts on helping to make the Open House/Art Show a success.  Sorry for the last minute notice!

PTO Meeting November 2, 2009

Our next PTO meeting will be held on November 2 at 7:00 pm at the school.  An agenda is in the works – the agenda will include a list of the volunteer opportunities for discussion at the meeting as well as to gather volunteers for the positions.  We hope that we can provide some great support to the teachers and students this year – come on out on the 2nd and provide your thoughts/insights – we’d love to have you.

Classroom Coordinators

We are looking for more volunteers to serve as classroom coordinators – the classroom coordinators assist the teachers as needed, sometimes planning special events for the kids such as holiday festivities or other classroom events.   Based on feedback from those involved in previous years, we thought that it would be best to have two volunteers for each of the classrooms.  We have one volunteer for each of the classrooms (Kim Martinez K/1, Lori Prew 2/3 and Lisa Dudek 4/5)  Please let us know if you would be willing to serve with Kim, Lori and Lisa as a classroom coordinator in the K/1, 2/3, or 4/5 classrooms.

Thank you all for your support.  Please be sure to check the Pinecroft Website – I know that Jeani and Bonnie are working hard to keep the calendar and other pages updated and the PTO will continue to update the PTO page when news and events happen!

Happy October!

We had our first PTO meeting on Monday, October 5th.  We had great turnout, super dialog, ended on time, and socialized afterwords!  Highlights follow:
Classroom Parent Volunteer Opportunities: We’re looking for two volunteers from each classroom K/1, 2/3, and 4/5 to help out with this position this year.  It’s a lot for one person to take on coordination of food and gift cards for all of the great classroom events that take place.  So we thought two people could share the effort and ease the burden.  We are working to complete the calendar of events for the year by the end of this month to further ease this process and to make participation for parents easier.  If you are interested in volunteering as a classroom parent, please reach out to Bridget (bfweinert@gmail.com).
School Store: Liisa Zimmerman has been amazing in helping to coordinate the School Store this year.  We even have a pink t-shirt option!  Please be sure to return your order forms by October 9th.  The order form is attached for anyone who needs it.  Checks should be made out to Pinecroft PTO.
Halloween Parade: The Norton Halloween Parade will be held on October 24th.  We need volunteers!  Children and parents or supervisors willing to make noise, throw candy and have fun while driving down Main St. are required.  Additional opportunities include acquisition of candy and hay, and help setting up the ‘float’ the morning of the event.  Please contact Jenna (jhowe89@comcast.net) to sign up.  We really need your help.
Fall Cleanup: The fall cleanup and art show are being scheduled.  Tentative dates are November 8th for the cleanup and November 15th for the Art Show.
Razzle Dazzle Raffle: The Pinecroft Board of Directors identified a fun and exciting way for us to raise money for the annual fund.  This high stakes raffle will run from November through the holidays to raise money.  Details are being finalized and will be provided at our next PTO meeting, November 2nd.
Have a great day!

In addition to the Houghton Mifflin reading program we are beginning leveled guided reading groups. The reading program is also supplemented with many teacher made materials.

In kindergarten math we have explored many concepts including, patterns, shapes, sizes, more, fewer and positional words. We are learning to identify and correctly form our numbers 1 through 20.

In first grade math we are learning the number to 100 using place value. We are ordering numbers and comparing numbers using the greater than and less than signs. We will learn fact families this month and talk about odd and even numbers.

In Social Studies we began with a unit on families. We created a family tree which will be going home shortly. We will be expanding on this unit by talking about our community then on to the helpers in our communities.

In science we have begun to learn all about bats and how useful and good these mammals are. We are now convinced that there is no such thing as vampires! We will continue learning about other nocturnal animals throughout this month as well as other animals that will soon be migrating and hiberating.

The top book pick of the month has been The Black Lagoon series by Mike Thaler. They make for a great read aloud and the kids are wild about them. Check them out at your local library!

While on the topic of books, a new book club order was sent home this week. If you have any trouble ordering on line or just don’t have the time to do so, please send in your order to me and I’ll order them for you. Just send in a check made out to Scholastic. I will try to send out a new flyer each month.

The children are enjoying the weekly specials with Mrs. Arcand (Spanish), Andy (Music), Miss Anne (Art) and gym with the Wheaton College students, Chris and James.

We have several wonderful Wheaton College students that assist daily in the classroom. You may hear the names Zack, Emily, Glorisel, Kate, Sasha, Jimmy or Ashley mentioned from time to time. It truly puts a smile on my face when I turn and see students gathered around an assistant in each corner of the room enjoying a good book together.

Before you know it, Halloween will be here. That is always a favorite holiday in our classroom. I may be asking for some assistance for our annual Halloween party which will take place on Friday, October 30. Stay tuned for more details as the date approaches.

October 7th update

What a fabulous group of students we have in the 4/5 classroom this year!

We enjoyed creating our get-to-know-me project: The Next American Idols. The students and teachers created album covers and song titles based on their own favorite hobbies, interests, colors, etc. Andy brought in some of his rare albums as models and shared the music with us on a portable record player. Most students had not seen a record album or turntable before! The projects are beautifully displayed in our classroom. Please come and check them out!

Our Houghton Mifflin language arts program and Columbia Writing Project provide a thorough language arts experience for the children. We’re excited this year to integrate science and writing whenever possible. You may have noticed that our weekly spelling words are going back and forth between science vocabulary and traditional spelling words. The students did a fantastic job on their first portfolio writing piece, comparing and contrasting plant and animal cells after having read about them, illustrated them in great detail and observed them under the microscope. Wow!

Our Houghton Mifflin science curriculum for the first part of the year focuses on The Life Processes: Cells, Plant Systems and Traits of Living Things. Weekly nature walks supplement our classroom experience. We have collected, analyzed and classified leaves and sketched interesting discoveries in our naturalists’ journals. On Tuesday afternoons, Mrs. Corkum and Mrs. Elia will be conducting a science lesson together, further integrating the two curricula. This upcoming Friday, Miss Anne will also be doing leaf studies in art class with the children. What a connection!

The first Pinecroft Pal Picnic of the year was a huge hit! Notes and letters have been “mailed” back and forth between the two classrooms, generating lots of excitement and anticipation! We look forward to many more activities together throughout the year.

We’re so impressed by the Wheaton intern “crew” working at Pinecroft. They bring a variety of majors and areas of expertise to our students, from math to music to Spanish and more. Phys. Ed. teachers, James and Chris, bring the right mix of enthusiasm and good sportsmanship to our weekly gym class.

Don’t hesitate to email us with any questions or comments. We’re off to a great start!

Curriculum Guide

Fall Edition 2009
2-3 Classroom
Curriculum Guide

For parents who wonder what our week is like, here’s a brief overview.

Reading: We will be reading every day, using the Houghton Mifflin Reading series as a basal text. Vocabulary Works, Wordly Wise (grade 3), Phonics (grade 2), and SRA (Power Builders) are the supplementary materials, along with Following Directions and Analogies: Concept Connections. The Reading/Thinking Skills workbook will be used for a homework assignment, usually on Mondays. In addition I will be reading a chapter book orally to the class daily to increase vocabulary recognition and listening skills, as well as for enjoyment.

Spelling: A list a week will be covered from the Houghton Mifflin Reading series. A pre-test will be given on Mondays (Tuesdays in holiday weeks) and only words misspelled will be retested on Fridays. Any child with a perfect score will not need retesting, but will be required to do language exercises using those words.

Writing: The students will write on a topic every week with instruction on sentence structure, grammar, main idea, and details. The reading series is our guide.

Language: A specific grammar lesson, from the reading series, will be introduced and worked on weekly. We are covering recognition of sentences, the different types of sentences, identifying the subject or naming parts and predicates or action parts, as well as capitalization and punctuation, at this time.

Mathematics: We work from the D.C. Health Mathematics books. There will be a daily lesson, teacher-directed, with practice exercises. Second graders will do an extra word problem lesson each week, while third graders will be introduced to Mindbenders, problems using deductive reasoning skills.

Handwriting: We use the Zaner-Bloser method. Second graders will be introduced to cursive eventually and third graders will review and practice their skills.

Social Studies: The curriculum this year is based on Kids, Customs, and Cultures to introduce the ways of living in different countries around the world. We’ll read, view videos, do activities, sample food, and practice some words in a different language. Canada, Germany, Egypt, Japan, New Zealand and Chile are the countries in this unit. There will be a geography component to this as well. We will also do an integrated unit on Antarctica and the penguins in the winter. A separate map skills lesson is also done each week.

Science: The Houghton Mifflin Science program Book A: How Living Things Function will be our guide through the fall, studying plants and animals. Currently we have worked on the process skills necessary to be a scientist. We conducted an experiment to answer the question “Is the bean seed alive?” Hopefully, you received the bean seeds last week and can transplant them, if viable.

Spanish: Mrs. Arcand will introduce vocabulary and conversational Spanish to each grade level once a week on Tuesdays with homework assignments due on Fridays. Any study assignments should carry into the next week.

Music: Andy Solberg will teach each grade weekly on the recorder (grades 2, 3, 4, 5) and conduct a singing session as well. Thursday is music day when every child should bring a recorder and music folder to school, along with the Practice Sheet signed by a parent.

Art: Ms. Anne West teaches each grade on Fridays and coordinates projects with class curriculum.

Physical Education: Each classroom will have a weekly outdoor, structured session. Sneakers and outdoor clothing are a must! Our class is assigned Wednesday mornings from 10:00 -10:45. Indoor lessons will be conducted during inclement weather.

Homework: Homework is assigned Monday through Thursday. You have probably already seen the folder with the assignment paper inside. Homework is your child’s responsibility. Each child should be able to complete the assignments independently, but will need helpers to study effectively for Spelling and Spanish, and for Math fact review (always a good thing even if not specifically assigned).

It’s going to be an exciting year!
