Chapter XXI
In the Arctic

As they headed toward the open sea the penguins got restless. They started to fight so Mr. Popper brought them all up to the top deck. They looked over the edge and almost pushed each other off the ship! They finally got to the Arctic and scrambled to get off the boat. Captain Cook and Greta went straight to the water and dove for fish. Columbus, Victoria, Nelson, Jenny, Magellan, Adelina, Scott, Isabella, Ferdinand, and Louisa all went exploring. They had never been to the Polar Regions before. Meanwhile Mr. Popper and Admiral Drake talked about the expedition. All the penguins came back in about an hour. One explorer had a radio. He turned it on and it was Military March. The penguins all started their routine. All of the explorers laughed. A polar bear came over. All of the explorers were afraid, but the polar bear just roared. He sounded like he was laughing! All the penguins went exploring again. They met lots of Arctic animals like a ringed seal, willow ptarmigan, Peary Caribou, Lemmings, Arctic hares, and Arctic foxes. The penguins all got really tired and went to sleep on the ice. Most of the days were very similar to this day and it went on for a year!
Then one day something different happened. Some of the females started laying down a lot more. After about two weeks of this an egg popped up! Then another and another! Then they started to crack! “CRACK!” went all of the eggs. Then baby penguins hatched right out. All of the sailors were extremely excited. They jumped and laughed. Weeks later more and more hatched. They were all very excited; that meant they could sail back home!
They were all very sad to leave the penguins, however. They all said their good byes. Mr. Popper was the saddest when they left, but it was time to go home. Admiral Drake told Mr. Popper all of the penguins would be happier there and so would the explorers. But he also told Mr. Popper he could come back with the explorers any time and he did. More and more penguins were born and the expedition was a success!
